Orchestra Hall Renovation
Minneapolis, MN
In the fall of 2007, JDD was contracted by the Minnesota Orchestra to create a design concept for the eventual renovation of its existing hall on Nicollet Mall. The goal was to explore the potential of the project and create a series of images that would excite and intrigue the potential donor base, energizing the fundraising process.
We approached the concept design studies by addressing three considerations; program analysis, precedent research and context study. Our methodology was to study these three influences as interdependent considerations to arrive at a fundamental understanding of the Orchestra’s goals.
The concept design study yielded three potential options for an approach to the design of Orchestra Hall, all of which had the following characteristics: strong contextual relationships, honest dynamic spaces generated directly from the program, and thorough site analysis and extensive program research and precedent studies. The designs were represented by a considerable number of physical interior and exterior models at various scales, graphics and illustrations, and ultimately a book of the schemes ready for publication and use in a capital campaign.
